Get back to the surface:
  • When you're ready to ascend, be sure to LOOK UP and all around as you come up.
  • Keep one hand over your head to protect your noggin just in case another snorkeler, or a kayak, or a turtle, is above you as you rise.

Get your snorkel clear:
  • Unless you have a "dry" snorkel that seals off water from getting in, you'll need to clear the water out of your snorkel once at the surface.
  • The "blast" method works just fine (you learned it while surface snorkeling), but you can also try the "displacement" method.
  • As you ascend, exhale a small amount into your snorkel as you near the surface.
  • This air will force out the water, and as you break the surface, there will be little or no water in the snorkel.
  • Always take a cautious first breath, and clear any residual water with a gentle blast.

Rest, and do it again!  Remember, only one member of a buddy team should be underwater at a time, just in case someone needs help.  Take turns, and enjoy yourself!

Congratulations! Now it's time to hit the water!
