Select a Mask: Every mask fits a slightly
different shape face, just like every brand of jeans fits differently.
There are some key areas to check when deciding if a mask fits you
properly.
|
Width: The width of the seal (or skirt) is measured side to
side at the inner seal. The wider your face, the wider the mask.
|
Height: Some masks are shorter top-to-bottom, and those are
better for children, adults with smaller faces, or people with low
hairlines.
|
Angularity: People with broad faces and round cheeks need masks with less "scoop," or difference in height between the center
and edges of the mask seal. Those with angular faces and high
cheekbones will do better with a mask that seals further back on the
sides of the face.
|
| Once you've selected a mask you think might fit, use the following steps
to check it: |
Fold the strap out of the way and seat the mask on your face with
both hands, with the lower edge of the seal about halfway between your
nose and your upper lip. Make sure your hair is out of the way. Inhale lightly. The mask should suction to your face without large
air leaks.
Look in a mirror or have a friend help you. Exhale lightly
while pressing the mask gently against your face (this lets the seal
take its natural shape without forcing it onto your face). The inner mask seal
should have small or no gaps at the sides of your face (brow to cheekbone),
forehead, and cheeks.
The
mask should be comfortable, without pressure points between your
eyebrows, bridge of your nose, or your upper lip.
Once you've chosen your mask, adjust the
strap.
- Loosen the strap so you put the strap around the back of your head
easily.
- Pull on the loose ends of the mask strap to tighten a couple of
notches at a time.
- The strap should be just tight enough to hold the mask securely on
your face.
- Too tight, and not only will you be uncomfortable and have red
marks on your face after snorkeling, but the mask is more likely to
leak!
- You should be able to easily pull the mask away from your face
with fingers and thumb while exhaling through your nose.
