Select Fins: A good set of
fins (or flippers!) will move you easily through the water and be
comfortable on your feet. To select your fins, consider the following: |
Snorkelers usually wear full-foot fins or soft adjustable fins, which are designed to wear
over a bare foot or soft fin sock.
Full-foot fins are sized by men's shoe size. Adjustable fins are usually Small, Medium, and Large.
There is no right or left foot in fins.
Some fin designs have wider foot pockets while others are narrower.
If you snorkel in places with rough entry points, or you prefer more
support or foot protection, choose open-heel adjustable strap fins, worn
with a neoprene boot with full sole or a neoprene water shoe.
Your fins should fit snugly but comfortably. Too loose, and the
fin will wiggle through the water when you kick and rub against your foot.
Too tight, and the fins will be hard to put on wet feet, and may cause toe
cramps.
The photo at right shows the maximum gaps you should have between your
fin and foot.
If you have a little extra space in the fin, try a
pair of fin socks to protect your feet and improve the fit. |
