| There are a few different ways to get in
the water. |
From a boat with a swim platform, do the "giant stride":
- Don your mask and
fins and put your
snorkel in your mouth.
- With your toes at the edge, put a hand on your mask and snorkel
mouthpiece to hold them in place.
- Check to be sure the area below you is clear, then look to the
horizon and take a big step forward.
- Your body should stay upright as you splash into the water.
- Kick yourself to the surface as needed, and move away from the
entry so others won't land on you.
- Some boats have a ladder that you may just climb down with your
fins on.

From a small boat such as an inflatable, do the "back
roll":
- Don your mask and
fins and put your
snorkel in your mouth.
- Check behind you to be sure the area is clear.
- Tuck your chin to your chest, put a hand on your mask and snorkel
mouthpiece to hold them in place, and roll backwards.
- Your back should hit the water - don't try to do a somersault!
- Kick yourself to the surface as needed, and move away from the
entry so others won't land on you.

From the beach, if the water is calm:
- With your mask on and snorkel in your mouth, walk into water about
waist deep.
- Don your fins, using the buoyancy of the water to support your
body. It's OK to peek! Your mask & snorkel will help you
to see what you're doing under the water.

From the beach, if there are waves:
- Don your mask, snorkel, and fins at the edge of the water.
- Shuffle sideways or backwards into the water, looking behind you
to keep an eye on the waves.
- Once you're in thigh-to-waist deep water, turn and snorkel out to deeper
water.
